A Successful Spring 2009 Summit for all team members!
Emerald Odyssey Expeditions visited and was successful in summitting Mt Elbrus this June. Mt Elbrus is a volcano located in the western Caucasus mountain range, Russia, near the border of Georgia, in the northern Iranian plateau. A volcano that has lain dormant for about 2,000 years.
At 5,642 metres (18,510 ft) the west summit is the highest point in the Caucasus’, the highest mountain in Europe and one of the Seven Summits. The east summit is slightly lower: 5,621 metres (18,442 ft). It is located between the Black and Caspian Seas so weather is an issue any time of the year, most people climb in July and August, even then temperatures can still drop to the -20’s or -30’s. We went in June in order to avoid the busy summer crowds and to complete the climb as a ski tour.
Emerald Odyssey is put its original 2001 Mt. Everest Team back together plus one. The team was made up of Leo and Deryl Kelly along with Dave Rodney and Ryan Wilkinson of Canmore.
