EMERALD ODYSSEY CANADIAN EVEREST TREK FALL 2007
Correspondence From The Mountain:
October 12, 2007
The Emerald Odyssey Expeditions, Fall 2007 Base Camp Trek has arrived in Kathmandu. Most of the group has now had 4 days to venture and enjoy the chaotic wonder of crazy K- DU. I think I can speak for the group when I say we are all anxious to get ourselves far from this city, very soon, and into the Khumbu Valley. The weather has been hot and muggy and that has created issues with flights into our first destination, Lukla, the staging ground for most treks to base camp. No flights have been able to land in Lukla for 3 days and only today (friday) have flights run. Tomorrow looks like it could be our only good weather for a couple of days so we are all hoping for our chance; we're determined to be in Monjo, our first overnight stop, for tomorrow night. Today was a busy day of tours for the group. First we took a Everest Mountain view flight. The clouds were thick in the valley below but once we got over 3500m it was blue skies and brilliant white peaks to our north, with Everest's whole massive visible through the tiny windows. If only we could have made a few more passes, just seeing it once wasn't enough. It's only made us more hungry to get out of Kathmandu and on to our trek. The afternoon we spent touring one of Kathmandu's more famous temple's, the hippy named 'monkey temple' and the ancient city and palace of Patan. We've finished our day off with Nepal's best pizza at Fire and Ice and we'll tuck in for the night and hope for clear sky's in the morning! Hopefully the next update will be in a couple of days from now from Namche Bazaar.
